Honor 8 Pro vs. OnePlus 5: The Goliath vs. Goliath story

Performance and Battery of  Honor 8 Pro!

Performance and battery comparison

What makes a smartphone extremely powerful and long-lasting? The answer is the processor, battery and how the two have been optimized. The OnePlus 5 and Honor 8 Pro seem to be the two best smartphones in the Rs 25-35K category, but which one is better when it comes to the performance and battery life? Well, that’s what we will try to find out today.

Tech specs

The OnePlus 5 houses an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset clocked at 2.4GHz with both the 6GB and 8GB of RAM variants. The Honor 8 Pro on the other hand, packs the parent company’s octa-core Kirin 960 processor clocked at the same speed with 6GB RAM. For sure, the Snapdragon 835 is the more popular processor, the Kirin 960 gives similar performance.

As mentioned above, the OnePlus 5 comes in two variants and along with the RAM, you also get onboard memory of either 64GB or 128GB. In contrast, the Honor 8 Pro ships with 128GB of built-in memory. While that should be sufficient, you can also extend it further up to 256GB with a 128GB microSD card. And, that gives it a significant edge over the OnePlus 5 which doesn’t offer expandable storage at all.

General usage

In terms of optimization, touch response and multitasking, I felt that the Honor 8 Pro has an edge with its smooth interface and quick response time. The OnePlus 5 is a bit slower in response, but is capable of handling more apps while multitasking because of the 8GB RAM variant. But that again costs 38K, 8000 rupees more than the Pro.

Gaming

Gaming is great on both devices, as both can handle all the high-end games with ease and gives a lag-free game play. We enjoyed playing games on the Honor 8 Pro due to its 2K display that gives more vivid and crystal clear images. We would also like to mention that we experienced heating issues with the OnePlus device.

Battery life

All that power doesn’t help if the phone doesn’t last long. Thankfully, both the phones don’t disappoint in this regard. The OnePlus 5 is packed with a 3,300mAh battery, while the Honor 8 Pro comes equipped with a massive 4,000mAh unit. What’s interesting is that Honor 8 Pro is slimmer (at 7mm) while packing a larger battery, in comparison to the OnePlus’ fifth-gen offering (thickness of 7.2mm). In terms of usage, both smartphones easily last a day, although the Honor 8 Pro can last slightly longer.

Adding to that, the wide range of battery-saving options on the Honor smartphone help users get more juice in cases of emergency. Both phablets can also revive quickly, as the OnePlus 5 has Dash Charging, while the Honor 8 Pro supports the quick charge.

Bottom line

The competition seems tough between the two devices. However, the Honor 8 Pro seems to jump ahead of the OnePlus 5 with its intuitive and simple UI and battery optimization. Day-to-day performance is almost the same, but if you talk about value for money, then the 8 Pro offers Quad HD display, bigger battery, sleeker design all at 30K. Indeed a flagship killer at an affordable price. The Honor 8 Pro is available exclusively on Amazon.in.
