OnePlus has fulfilled its promise by launching the OnePlus Open, their inaugural foldable phone, in the Indian market. This innovative device boasts a 7.82-inch foldable 2K OLED display with a 1-120Hz LTPO panel, offering peak brightness of up to 2,800 nits. The screen is protected by Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG), and on the exterior, there is a 6.3-inch FHD+ OLED screen that supports a 10-120Hz (LTPO) refresh rate and features a ceramic guard.
Both screens support ProXDR and 1440Hz high-frequency PWM dimming, and the company claims that the display is TÜV Rheinland “reliable folding” certified, capable of enduring 1,000,000 or 1 million folds.
OnePlus has utilized cobalt molybdenum alloy and titanium alloy for the phone’s construction, making it lighter and more durable compared to current foldable phones, which typically use 316L surgical-grade stainless steel. The hinge’s spine plate is composed of a zirconium-based amorphous alloy, twice as strong as surgical-grade stainless steel, offering excellent wear and scratch resistance.
To achieve a slim and lightweight design, OnePlus has employed a Flexion hinge with a “water-drop” shape, reducing the number of hinge components from around 100 to just 69. When unfolded, the phone’s body is a mere 5.8mm thick, and when folded, it measures 11.7mm in thickness. The glass version weighs 245g, while the leather version comes in at 239g. Additionally, it features an alert slider.
The OnePlus Open boasts a groundbreaking 48MP sensor from Sony’s LYTIA “Pixel Stacked” technology, offering image quality on par with the 1-inch Sony IMX989 sensor. It also includes a 48MP OV64B 3X telephoto sensor with 6x in-sensor zoom and up to 120x digital zoom, along with a 48MP Ultra-Wide Camera, all of which support 4K 60 fps video recording. The phone has 32MP outer and 20MP inner front cameras, both equipped for 4K 30 fps video recording.
Running on OxygenOS 13.2, OnePlus Open is set to receive four years of major Android version upgrades and five years of security updates. It introduces “Open Canvas,” designed for enhanced everyday productivity, facilitating multi-window efficiency on a larger screen. Approximately 95% of mainstream apps are compatible with the expanded display. Open Canvas allows for multi-window operations and split screens without being limited by the physical screen size. You can display up to three app windows simultaneously in both vertical and horizontal orientations and customize their positions and sizes. Additionally, you can save up to nine multi-app presets for quick access to your preferred multi-app “workspace” combination.
The phone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, equipped with 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 512GB of UFS 4.0 storage. It incorporates a source-focused heat dissipation system and has an IPX4 rating for splash resistance.
The OnePlus Open houses a 4805mAh battery with 67W fast charging capability, enabling a full charge in just 42 minutes. However, it does not support wireless charging.
Available in two variants, Emerald Dusk with a glass back and Voyager Black with a vegan leather back, the OnePlus Open is priced at Rs. 1,39,999 for the single 16GB + 512GB model. It is currently open for pre-orders through various channels, including Amazon.in, OnePlus.in, the OnePlus Store App, OnePlus Experience Stores, Reliance Digital, and Select Partner Stores, with sales commencing on October 27th.
