Moto Z + Insta-Share Projector is a movie theater in your pocket

The Insta-Share Projector is one of the most interesting mods available for the Moto Z

For years, we have been hearing about modularity in smartphones, allowing users to upgrade them by simply switching modules. Sadly however, most companies have simply teased us with the concept with no sights of seeing the commercial product. Last year thankfully, we did see a couple of phone makers actually offering this capability to consumers – LG and Moto. The Lenovo-owned brand brought the modularity to life with the Moto Z and its affordable sibling, the Z Play.

We got a chance to play with the Moto Z along with the Insta-Share Projector Moto Mod, as the manufacturer likes to call its modular accessories. And, let us say this up front, the combination is an ideal portable movie theater for entertainment enthusiasts. Wondering why we think so? Read on to find out.

Unlike the tacky implementation of LG with the G5 flagship, which required one to remove the bottom portion and then add the required module, Moto’s implementation is easy and quick. There are 16 pins at the back of the Moto Z (and the Moto Z Play too, so all our observations would be valid for it too). So all you need to connect the Insta-Share projector module or any other accessory is simply snapping it at the back. Yes, nothing else – no complex steps to follow, or even the need to do something in the software. The Moto Z intelligently detects the module, though you do need to turn on the projector. Thanks to a kickstand, you can place it on a surface to enjoy.

Once done, you can see your phone screen on a larger scale, wherever you want to project it to. The best part is that you can project everything, and don’t need to worry about doing it for only a few apps like a movie player or YouTube. This means you can also see your pics of the trip with your friends or family, or see that funny clip with everyone at once.

If you say that you can wirelessly mirror your smartphone onto a TV, and the experience would be the same, then you’d be impressed to know that the Insta-Share mod offers a projection of up to 70-inches. You can also control the sharpness as per your need. Another thing which we appreciate about it is the fact that you don’t need to adjust the projection as that happens automatically depending upon the angle.

The Insta-Share Projector has a battery of its own, which means that it won’t drain your phone’s battery while working. You can easily watch a movie of about two hours with the module, although we do think that the battery drains rather quickly. You can charge it up with the micro-USB cable that’s used for juicing up the Moto Z Play too.

Overall, we are in love with the pair of the Moto Z and Insta-Share Projector. They can be carried anywhere easily, letting you enjoy your movies wherever you go. Pairing them is also a seamless process. Priced at Rs 15,999, when bought along with the phone, the module is able to justify its price with the ultimate convenience.
