OnePlus has been toying around with an idea of a flagship that begs the question – What’s the hefty price tag for? If this company can deliver a no-compromise smartphone at half the cost of a premium smartphone, why can’t others? Since its inception, OnePlus has strived its way to earn its fan following by delivering a stellar series of devices that questions the mere existence of premium category smartphones.
With the OnePlus 7 Pro, the company hopes to earn its place among the giants like Apple and Samsung. The company has gone lengths to ensure this device reeks of its fruitful innovation in the smartphone industry with its bezel-less display, 90Hz refresh rate screen, selfie mechanism, and a three optic camera module. It is every bit as awesome as an Apple iPhone or a Galaxy S10.
Let’s check it out in depth!
Design
In terms of the design, the OnePlus 7 Pro is huge and bulky for its gigantic screen real estate. Thanks to its bezel-less screen this slab looks as ideal as it possibly can. The back seems to resemble its earlier iterations with a subtle colour shade to its glossy finish.
The metallic chassis offer a study feel with its smooth contours that shouts rugged and a motorised pop-up camera on top. OnePlus has ensured the selfie unit swivels down if it detects a falling scenario.
Display
It is quite difficult to define how the 6.67-inch QHD+ Fluid AMOLED panel of the OnePlus 7 Pro looks when held in person. The display with its 90Hz refresh rate and HDR10+ is one of the best displays we have seen and is comparable to something we have seen on Apple`s MacBook Pro. The content looks crisp and UI transitions are buttery smooth which enhances the user experience by up a notch.
Camera
The camera was never a strong point of OnePlus devices up until now. The OnePlus 7 Pro camera is a huge upgrade over their previous launches with its 48MP + 16MP (Ultra-wide) + 8MP (telephoto) lens setup. The quality of images from this setup was comparable to the ones on Google`s Pixel and Huawei P30 Pro. Besides the saturation level, everything was spot on with accurate colour reproduction and crisp details.
Autofocus works flawlessly to capture the intricate details of the given subject while keeping the object in focus. Where the camera struggles is in the colour tones, shadow rendering and object highlights. Nightscape on the 7 Pro is also not at the level of the ones on the flagships. It losses out on important details when capturing under low lighting conditions.
The front camera is good for everything that you through at it. However, it too suffers from severe low lighting grainy conditions. But it works well to unlock the device in the lowest lighting conditions.
Though packing the same hardware as their premium counterparts, the OnePlus 7 Pro is nowhere near the rivals in terms of the image quality. Nevertheless, this is a significant bump over the previous and one can say that the company is learning its way through.
Performance
Performance has always been a USP of the OnePlus devices as they pack the latest gen processors to glide over the most demanding tasks and gaming titles. Under the hood, the 7 Pro is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 (SoC).
It runs on OxygenOs 9.5 build on top of Android Pie, it features a Universal Flash Storage 3.1 that allows for a faster rate of transfers and dials down the loading speeds. All these tech results in a smooth performance that can outperform a serious looking premium device any other day. The demanding games like Asphalt, PUBG, and MC5 ran smoothly given the max graphics settings and the device didn’t struggle for even a second, which was expected considering the OnePlus legacy of performance-driven smartphones.
OnePlus also bundled their liquid cooling technology to keeps the thermals in check when using it for extended periods of time.
Battery
The battery on the OnePlus 7 Pro is a respectable 4,000 mAh unit, which looks good considering it has to power that massive 6.67-inch QHD+ screen. But to our surprise by turning on the adaptive resolution we managed to get a decent battery life of 12 hours. And thanks to the Warp Charging support it took a mere half an hour to replenish the battery from 0 to 60 per cent, with a full charge coming in under 2 hours.
Gizmo Verdict
At Rs 57,999 for (12GB/256GB), the OnePlus 7 Pro does sport a premium price tag. But this price tag is justified considering the device gives a premium smartphone a run for its money. The smartphone works flawlessly and emits a premium vibe with its fabulous design. For those who are entering the premium brand from midrange, the 7 Pro will sure to wow the user with its meticulously crafted design, crystal clear display, scrumptiously looking camera, blazingly fast processor and a battery charging mechanism.
