Samsung recently ventured into the domain of classifying its smartphone with exclusive badging with its new S branded smartphones. The company announced these new and revised smartphones called the Galaxy M30s, Galaxy A50s, and a Galaxy A70s smartphones, which pack the company’s latest efforts at a user refined experience delivered at its best.
While these upgrades are not all significant over the earlier iterations, it does beg a new and fresher perspective from outside. So let’s take a look at the A70s and see if the “S” stands for “standard” or “subtle.”
Design
The first departure from the earlier A70 is the design and built quality. Though the design exactly looks similar to the A70, it feels a lot lighter than the former. The design is reasonably slim and agile to handle, and the bezels are narrowed down to a manageable form factor. Perhaps the most noticeable quality that arises from this restructuring comes from its new 4500mAh battery unit. The new gradient pattern on the back adds a modern flair to the stale looking plastic back and breathes a new life into the design department.
The screen still holds the much in style U-shaped notch for the selfie camera and does come with the In-display fingerprint sensor that works quickly without a hitch. The 6.7-inch (20:9) FHD+ display is nothing short of a theatre wrapped in your hands with its well-calibrated AMOLED screen topped with a Gorilla Glass on front. It was hours past midnight, where somebody told me to sleep as I was binge-watching some Netflix on this smartphone. For that, I would like to give the A70s a ten on ten for the display quality.
The One UI on A70s now has the same color presets as this years’ flagship S-series and Note phones – ‘Vivid’ and ‘Natural.’ The software also has a Night Mode and Always-on mode – features that let you make the most of deep, dark AMOLED blacks.
Performance and Software
The Samsung Galaxy A70s is powered by 11nm Snapdragon 675 octa-core chipset that feels a bit outdated, considering the 700 has been out for some time now. The benchmarking speaks for itself as the 675 falls way behind in terms of raw performance metrics.
However, don’t let the numbers bog you down, because it’s the real-world experience that matters. The One UI on the A70s is “Vivid” and “Dynamic” with its optimal performance and smooth transition effects. The storage space of 128GB is more than adequate to justify your social media apps and all your games. Moreover, this can be easily topped via a 512GB microSD if needed.
Speaking about the gaming performance, the games ran exceptionally well, with smooth graphics and ultra-frame rate that made our gaming sessions a much-awaited thing at the office. We managed to play PUBG, Asphalt 8, Call of Duty mobile at max settings without anything to complain. The sound quality was equally compelling as the vocals and music were audible over the ongoing chaos at the cafeteria.
We didn’t get the chance to test out the Samsung Pay, but the users cite the app works well with the credit card system at any POS terminal across India. The one thing we thought to point out is that the device we received had some issues as the smartphone didn’t wake up until after a few seconds after receiving a call. It might be a case of a faulty piece, but its something we thought would be a significant problem that needed fixing.
Camera
The camera spec includes a 64MP (GW1) sensor assisted by an 8MP wide-angle lens and a 5MP depth sensor on the back. The front consists of a single 32MP sensor that works similar to the GW1 on the back.
The increase in pixel size marks a significant improvement from the A70 as the images seem more dynamic with punchy colors to the shots. The A70 already had a great camera so that we couldn’t tell much difference between the shots among them. The only difference we though between the two was the enhanced dynamic range in low light shots with improved clarity.
The shots taken under bright sublight were top-notch with crisp details and a balanced color palette. Zooming the images didn’t lose the intricate details in shots and made the distant shots seem fantastic.
The camera locks its focus within seconds, which is perfect for quick snaps and also fares well for up-close macro shots. Portrait shots, too, turned out to be useful in both outdoor and indoor light. The software efficiently managed to fill in the details to make the edges blend well with the background lighting.
The wide-angle shots are worthy of its name, as the lens was able to capture an entire backdrop without losing out on much content and detail.
The low light performance as the night mode shoot quality images. The photos were accurate with colors.
The selfie camera, too, works well as the HDR mode on the camera benefits from the software prowess. The selfies came out to be Instagram quality under the right lighting conditions.
Last but not least, Samsung also adds some exciting modes like a super slow-motion and super steady mode that works well.
Battery Life
Samsung Galaxy A70s comes with a 4500mAh battery that comes support for 25W USB PD fast charging. The standard charger works well, too, as it can juice up the device from 0 to 100% within an hour. The battery life is a respectable pack as it can scour through two days worth of average usage without breaking a sweat. We managed to strike off 20% worth of battery charge through our long gaming session.
Gizmo Verdict
The Samsung Galaxy A70s is a worthy upgrade without much fuss delineating its new characteristic. Samsung has managed to turn this incredible smartphone into the desired smartphone. The Samsung Galaxy A70s is falling for direct competition with OnePlus 7.
Despite these things, the A70s smartphone is worthy of a consideration who objectifies a beautiful AMOLED screen, Camera performance, and all-day battery life above everything else.
