The Infinix Zero 40 5G in Action: A Complete Review of Its AI, Camera, and Performance Features

Infinix’s latest release, the Zero 40 5G, seems set to redefine expectations for its flagship line. Moving past its “Zero” branding, this phone packs an array of impressive features and segment-firsts, we received the international review unit with the 12GB RAM and 512GB storage variant, priced at ₹27,999 in India. With 4K 60fps video recording on both the front and rear cameras, a 50-megapixel ultrawide lens, and the first-ever Infinix AI suite, this model aims to stand out in the competitive mid-range market. But do these specs and capabilities truly deliver?

Let’s take an in-depth look at what the Infinix Zero 40 5G brings to the table.

Design: Elegant and Ergonomic

The Infinix Zero 40 5G measures 164.31 x 74.47 x 7.9 mm and weighs 195 grams, striking a balance between a substantial feel and comfortable handling. It is available in three attractive color options: Moving Titanium, Violet Garden, and Rock Black, each offering a unique aesthetic to suit different style preferences. The Infinix Zero 40 5G impresses with a design that’s both sophisticated and practical. Its curved sides and flat edges give it a modern, comfortable feel, with a two-tone back panel that subtly etches “Zero” into the corner. The Rock Black variant we reviewed has a chic, professional look, while the large circular camera module with a focus-ring accent adds a distinct, premium touch.

Functionality is equally well-executed. On the right, the power and volume buttons are within easy reach, while the bottom hosts a USB Type-C port, speaker, microphone, and SIM tray. The top includes an IR blaster and speaker grille, and with its IP54 rating, the Zero 40 5G is built to handle everyday dust and splashes, making it as durable as it is attractive.

Display: Vivid, Smooth, and Built for Media

The Infinix Zero 40 5G comes with a striking 6.78-inch Full-HD+ Curved AMOLED display that offers immersive visuals and sharp details. With a refresh rate of up to 144Hz, it ensures smooth scrolling and fluid animations, making it ideal for gaming and media consumption. To enhance durability, the display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5, adding resistance to everyday scratches and impacts, making it as sturdy as it is visually appealing.

Infinix sports the Zero 40 5G with a stunning curved 6.78-inch AMOLED display. Achieving an impressive 93.4% screen-to-body ratio with slim bezels, the screen is highly immersive for streaming and gaming. The display supports up to 144Hz, giving users flexibility to switch between 60Hz, 120Hz, and 144Hz depending on their needs. Though the LTPS panel doesn’t dip below 60Hz for additional power savings, it does provide a high 360Hz touch sampling rate for ultra-responsive interactions.

Color quality is another highlight, with 10-bit color depth and full DCI-P3 coverage, making it ideal for media lovers. The display peaks at 1,300 nits brightness indoors but can struggle slightly under harsh sunlight. With Widevine L1 certification, users can stream HD content from popular platforms seamlessly. Additionally, the in-display fingerprint scanner, though positioned slightly lower than expected, is fast and accurate.

Software: Smart AI Features with Room for Improvement

The Infinix Zero 40 5G runs on Android 14, featuring the latest iteration of Infinix’s user interface, XOS 14.5. This combination provides users with a smooth, modern software experience packed with practical features and enhanced visual appeal. The phone also comes with the most recent security patch, dated June 5, 2024, ensuring up-to-date protection and enhanced device security right out of the box.

Running on Android 14 with Infinix’s XOS 14.5, the Zero 40 5G delivers a polished user interface with smooth animations. While some pre-installed apps are included, most are removable. One of the standout features is Infinix’s AI suite, featuring an array of tools designed to simplify tasks and enhance user experience.

Key AI Features

  • AI Eraser: Allows for quick object removal in photos, though results can be inconsistent.
  • Smart Cut-out: Enables users to extract specific objects from images with ease.
  • AI Vlog: Automatically creates video montages using up to 20 clips from the gallery, offering an intuitive vlogging experience.
  • AI Wallpaper Generator: Creates wallpapers from text or images but faced a “server upgrade” issue during testing.
  • Folax Voice Assistant: Handles basic tasks, translations, and phone functions, though it could benefit from more robust functionality.
  • AI Charging Protection: Intelligently manages power delivery to prevent overcharging, ensuring longer battery life and enhanced safety for the device.

Other useful features include edge controls for quick app access and IR control, which lets users manage devices via the phone’s IR blaster. Infinix has committed to two years of OS updates and three years of security patches, making it a solid choice for those prioritizing software support.

Performance: Reliable and Responsive

The Infinix Zero 40 5G is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 8200 Ultimate chipset, which provides solid performance for everyday tasks, multitasking, and moderate gaming. It is equipped with 12GB of LPDDR5x RAM, allowing smooth and responsive operation even under heavier workloads. Storage options go up to 512GB UFS 3.1, ensuring fast data access and ample space for apps, media, and files. This hardware setup makes the Zero 40 5G well-suited for users seeking reliability and speed in a mid-range device.

The MediaTek Dimensity 8200 Ultimate powers the Zero 40 5G, making it a capable performer for everyday tasks, multitasking, and light-to-moderate gaming. Paired with 12GB of LPDDR5x RAM (expandable virtually) and 256GB or 512GB of UFS 3.1 storage, the device offers robust memory and storage solutions.

Gaming on this device is generally smooth, thanks to the 144Hz refresh rate and large display; you can watch intensive games like BGMI and CODM being played on it in the video link below.

Camera: Great for Daylight, Amazing for Low Light

The Infinix Zero 40 5G is equipped with a versatile camera setup designed to appeal to photography enthusiasts and vloggers alike. The rear main camera is a powerful 108-megapixel wide sensor with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS), which enhances clarity and reduces blur in both photos and videos. It’s accompanied by a 50-megapixel ultra-wide camera with a 120-degree field of view, perfect for capturing expansive landscapes and group shots. On the front, the phone features another impressive 50-megapixel wide camera, ensuring high-quality selfies and detailed video footage for vlogging or video calls. This robust combination of high-resolution sensors provides users with a well-rounded photographic experience.

Positioning itself as a “vlogging phone,” the Zero 40 5G provides 4K 60fps video recording on its main, ultrawide, and front cameras. While this feature is rare in this price range, the stabilization options are limited to 4K at 30fps, and Ultra Steady Pro only functions at 1080p, making it a bit restrictive for serious vloggers. Portrait shots are decent, though the artificial bokeh can sometimes appear overdone.

The Infinix Zero 40 5G is designed to work seamlessly with GoPro and features a dedicated GoPro Mode, enabling users to view real-time footage on the phone’s screen and adjust settings remotely. With compatibility through the Works with GoPro program, it offers a smooth, integrated experience for GoPro users.

Still Photography Performance

In bright conditions, both the main and ultrawide cameras capture impressive detail and handle HDR beautifully, delivering vibrant and eye-catching photos. While there may be subtle color differences between the two lenses, this often enhances the vibrancy of images. The main camera performs admirably in low-light settings, capturing usable shots even in darker environments, though with some natural noise. While the ultrawide lens has room to improve in low light, it shines in well-lit scenes, making this camera setup versatile for various lighting conditions.

Audio and Call Quality

The phone’s dual stereo speakers, enhanced by JBL, deliver clear audio with good stereo separation, though bass might feel a bit lacking. DTS Hi-RES Audio support provides an enriched listening experience, while call quality is sharp on both ends, ensuring reliable communication.

Battery Life: Decent, with Fast Charging

The Infinix Zero 40 5G is equipped with a 5,000mAh battery, providing enough power for a full day of standard usage. When tested under heavy usage—144Hz refresh rate and 50% brightness—the battery lasted about 14 hours. For those needing a quick recharge, the device supports 45W wired charging, which fully charges the battery in approximately an hour. Additionally, it offers 20W wireless charging, a convenient feature rarely seen in this price range.

The Zero 40 5G houses a respectable 5,000mAh battery, capable of lasting a full day with moderate use. However, in high-stress scenarios with the brightness at 50% and the refresh rate at 144Hz, it lasted around 14 hours in tests. Users can extend battery life by adjusting to adaptive brightness and a lower refresh rate. The 45W wired charger powers the battery from 0% to full in about an hour, with options for Low-temp, Smart, and Hyper charging modes. Additionally, the 20W wireless charging is a convenient feature at this price point, and it supports 10W reverse wireless charging with bypass charging—perfect for topping up a smartwatch or wireless earbuds that support wireless charging.

Gizmo Verdict: A Strong Mid-Range Contender

The Infinix Zero 40 5G is a promising option in the mid-range category, especially for those prioritizing design, display quality, and camera capabilities in bright settings. While some AI features could use refining and the stabilization in 4K recording is limited, the phone’s overall performance, solid build, and software support make it a solid choice.

If you’re looking for a stylish smartphone with a standout display, solid gaming performance, and unique vlogging features like on-the-go GoPro support, the Infinix Zero 40 5G is worth considering. Its powerful hardware and software, combined with an IP54 rating for dust and splash resistance, make it a well-rounded option at an affordable price.
