Vivo X50 Review: Does it have the X-Factor?

With its wide range of smartphones available across price points, Vivo has found itself in the list of the top 5 smartphone brands in India for several quarters now. However, the brand didn’t have any offering in the super-premium segment above Rs 30k for a while now. Its last smartphone to cater to such a segment was the Vivo NEX, which got laurels for its pop-up front camera and under-display fingerprint scanner, things that have become a norm now. However, the company has just forayed into the segment again, with the powerful X50 duo. Dubbed Vivo X50 and X50 Pro, the smartphones bring forth some powerful camera functionality. We’ve been using the affordable offering of the two, the Vivo X50, for a while now, and here’s how our experience went.

Design

While Vivo X50 may not look different, it’s among the most premium phones you’ll hold in your hands. That’s because it has minimal aesthetics that are very pleasing, both at the fascia and the rear. With its all-screen design at the front with just a punch hole to hold the front camera, you can get an immersive experience. The best part is that the bezels at the bottom are also quite thin, and not the remaining three sides.

At the back, you’ll find the quad-camera array placed vertically on the top left. The module is accompanied by a flash, and the only other thing at the rear is Vivo’s branding. While the array juts out slightly, it’s not to the level that it’ll wobble when placed on the table.

For ports and buttons, both power switch and volume rocker are present on the right edge. While the top side is empty, the bottom features the USB Type-C port, SIM tray and a speaker grille.

Despite featuring a large display, the X50 doesn’t feel bulky at 173g. It’s also quite thin at 7.5mm. The phone is available in blue and black hues, both of which are quite classy.

Display

As mentioned above, the Vivo X50 offers an immersive experience, and that’s because it has a sizeable screen measuring 6.56-inches. Thanks to full HD+ resolution, AMOLED tech and fast 90HZ refresh rate, the display is ideal for watching movies, reading ebooks or playing games. It’s also bright enough to be read outdoors without any issues.

Camera

Since the camera is the highlight of the handset, we’re really excited to put that into the test, and we’ve to say that we weren’t disappointed. But before that, let’s talk about the specs first. The Vivo X50 sports quad cameras on its back, with a 48MP f/1.6 primary camera, a 13MP camera, an 8MP f/2.2 wide-angle shooter and a 5MP f/2.48 sensor. For locking focus on the subjects quickly, the device features support for phase detection autofocus. The camera UI is also loaded with options to complement the hardware.

The Vivo X50 will surely impress you with its camera performance, be it in daylight or low-light. Whether you’re capturing landscapes or trying to get closer to the subject, the device does a great job. Moreover, with the OIS-enabled primary shooter, it ensures that the handshakes are taken care of, both while capturing photos or videos. Speaking of videos, the smartphone can capture up to 4K videos at 30fps. Selfies also turn out pleasing, all thanks to a 32MP camera on the front.

Hardware

Inside the Vivo X50 runs the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 processor. The octa-core CPU features a 2.2GHz dual-core chip, and a 1.8GHz hexa-core chip which ensures a perfect balance between power and efficiency. The chipset is paired with 8GB of RAM to ensure that the device doesn’t slow down while running multiple apps. The performance, as you can expect, is lag-free. And gaming is an enjoyable experience too, thanks to Adreno 618 GPU. So whether you’re playing PUBG or Call of Duty, you can play for hours without any issue.

The X50 comes with 128GB storage onboard. However, it can’t be expanded further, since there’s no microSD card slot.

Battery and more

Vivo has offered the handset with the latest iteration of Android, i.e. Android 10, which is layered with its custom skin, called Funtouch OS. That means, you do get a range of pre-loaded apps, such as V-Appstore, i Manager, and more.

The X50 ships with a 4,200mAh battery that makes sure that the device lasts a day with ease. Even with heavy usage, one wouldn’t need to juice up the phone before the end of the day, which is pretty good. And when you do need to charge it, you get flash charge functionality, allowing you to juice up the device faster with the bundled 33W adapter.

Conclusion

The Vivo X50 is a loaded option that delivers on all fronts and goes a step further in the camera department. It’s available with a price tag of Rs 34,990 which makes it a worthy consideration for anyone looking to get a powerful option in the Rs 30k+ segment. That said, if you’re a gamer, then you might be inclined towards devices that are powered by flagship processors such as Realme X50 and iQOO 3, which is launched by Vivo’s sub-brand only. If however, the camera is your utmost priority, the Vivo X50 comes across as a great buy.
