Vivo Z1X Review: Is it worth to invest?

The Vivo Z1 Pro earned its fair share of reputation through its great display, powerful processor and a hoard of features, all in an amazing competitive price point. The smartphone offered a slew of features that immediately resonated with the user’s mindset, thus making the Z1 Pro a most sought out smartphone by the average user under the sub 15k price bracket.

Following up on this successful trait is the company’s new smartphone -the Vivo Z1X. This newer iteration marks an extreme step in every direction, as the smartphone goes to lengths to ensure a superb & engaging experience.

So, is this new smartphone worth the “X” badge or is a yet another marketing gimmick by Vivo? Let’s find out!

Body & Built

While looking at the Vivo Z1X, one couldn’t hope but notice the missing glass back which defined a sense of class to its rather pale looking polycarbonate back. Nevertheless, the design seems quite decent with slim overall bezels, slick design and a gradient back.

We recommend opting for a cover right away as the body easily picks up fingerprint and smudges that obliterates the great looks of this device. The overall built quality is good, as it feels sturdy and extremely easy to handle with its reduced weight of 189g.

Screen

The 6.38-inch Super AMOLED screen is marginally smaller than the Z1 Pro in regards to its size. The 2340x1080p panel supports always-on feature thanks to its OLED technology. It also comes with an In-display fingerprint sensor which is quick and responsive at unlocking the device.

The screen quality is shown by the fact that we were hooked on to the screen watching movies and YouTube videos for hours at a time. The quality also fairs well in outdoor light as the display can emit a peak brightness of 400nits to make the screen legible regardless of the setting. The viewing angles too are great as the screen maintained its punchy colours and ideal contrast level at all times.

Camera

The most prominent addition comes in shape of a 48MP primary rear camera, 8MP super wide-angle sensor and a 2MP depth sensor. The 48MP IMX582 lens is similar to the one used on the Redmi K20 series, which makes the shots comparable to a certain extent. The setup on the front is a robust 32MP selfie camera which produces fantastic results.

The smartphone lens setup clicks great pictures with exquisite details and spot-on colours reproduction under sufficient light. The default photo mode clicks 12MP resolution pictures, while the 48MP camera mode can be turned on as well. As expected, the 48MP shots certainly fill out a lot of detail that makes the shots crispy and high res. Portrait mode too works well as it always managed to perceive the intricate detail lying around the subject.

Low-light too was good, given the smart AI assist which took some time to furnish the final image. Low-light pictures clicked with Night mode turned on produced great results and were able to discern the most details in the background.

The 32MP selfie camera on the Vivo Z1X doesn’t seem to match the quality as found with the rear setup, but still looks okayish when it comes to image quality. Portrait selfies weren’t able to pick up the edges and struggles which can be fixed by software update.

Processor & UI

The Z1X is powered by the Snapdragon 712 AIE chipset that powers some of the latest smartphones across this price point. The chipset is optimised for peak performance as it breezes through several demanding apps and background activities without showing any signs of sluggishness.

We scoured through our daily apps such as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, Gmail, Chrome, WhatsApp, music player, YouTube and Netflix, with sufficient ease. There wasn’t a single time that the device ran out of breath with its frame rate drop or lag. The UI animation ran smoothly despite the plethora of apps running in the background. The one thing that works against the Z1X is its cluttered FunTouch OS which brings a whole lot of third party apps with it.

Gaming with the dedicated Ultra Gaming mode was a great experience as it has built-in features such as a Competition mode, 4D vibration and Gaming countdown. To recall, after using the Vivo Z1X as our primary driver for the past 2 weeks, we can conclude that the Z1X is one hell of a smartphone when it comes to performance.

Battery Life

The Vivo Z1X battery easily lasts more than a day with average use spread across a bit of social media, binge-watching and moderate gaming. The phone’s massive 4500mAh battery was able to last for a day and half on a single charge.

Additionally, there is a provision for build-in fast charging through a 22W Type-C power brick which notably takes the smartphone from 0 to 100 per cent in 1.25 hours.

Gizmo Verdict

Priced at ₹16,990 the Vivo Z1X is a bargain. The smartphone has features and raw power that would easily put its rivals to shame. The major verdict that can be concluded in this argument is that the Z1X unlike its competitors doesn’t excel in one department, but does everything well.

This fantastic all-round smartphone brings a lot to the table through its effortless and lags free experience. If you are looking for a sub-₹15k smartphone that does it all, look no further.
