Infinix Hot 7 Pro: Is it hot enough?

Infinix, a relatively new brand is trying to make headlines with their smartphones dabbing features that are quite unheard in the sub ₹10,000 category. The company with their offering such as the Infinix S4 & the Smart 3 Plus is redefining the mere definition of a budget smartphone.

Infinix has come up with another smartphone called the Hot 7 Pro which packs the segment best 6GB RAM which sounds totally insane for the given price. Nonetheless, is beefing up the RAM justify a great device. Well, let’s find out!

Design and Display

The design language is simple yet elegant with its smooth contours and accommodating shape. It sports a 6.19-inch HD+ display with the ubiquitous notch housing the front facing dual camera and selfie flash unit. The company has gone with a metal back which ups the overall feel and the colour schemes such as Midnight Aqua, Aqua Blue and Mocha Brown looks all the more refreshing.

The right side comes with the volume and power rocker while the SIM tray is kept on the left side of the device. The back houses the dual camera setup with a single LED flash and a centre positioned fingerprint scanner.

Hardware and Software

Coming to the internals the Infinix Hot 7 Pro packs a MediaTek Helio P22 chipset similar to the one on the S4, coupled with a PowerVR GE8320 GPU. It is backed up by a massive 6 gigs of RAM plus 64GB of internal memory, that can be further expanded up to 256GB via micro SD card slot.

The performance is nothing different from what we saw on the S4. It is a mediocre chipset that gives an average performer. Nonetheless, the device handled basic tasks and multitasking activities adequately. Gaming performance was okayish, but somehow it manages to PUBG in low graphics.

On the flip side, the company has provided a hoard of features that elevates the overall experience such as, a dedicated Game Boost mode, data saving WhatsApp mode, Bike mode and background app freezer mode.

As for the sensor unlock speed goes the response rate was quite good and the lag was barely noticeable. Users also have an option to take calls, click photos and browse through pictures using the gestures on the fingerprint sensor. It also supports a face unlock that we found to be surprisingly fast and accurate for 7 out of 10 times.

Coming to the software the device runs a modified version of its custom UI XOS 5.0 on top of Android 9.0 Pie. This includes some hefty amount of bloatware that users can opt to uninstall with the exception being the company-owned apps like XTheme, XClub, Phone Master that cannot be deleted.

Camera

The Hot 7 Pro sports a dual camera setup of primary 13-megapixel snapper with f/1.8 aperture and a 2-megapixel f/2.0 depth camera. The rear comes with a 32-megapixel selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture and screen flash. In terms of the camera, quality is quite similar to the ones we observed on the S4.

The image quality was quite good under sufficient sunlight and ambient lighting conditions. The triple camera setup managed to get us some great looking shots that had the level of clarity and colour reproduction we were hoping to acquire. The low-light camera performance felt a bit flimsy as the images came out to be noisy and grainy as the objects weren’t recognisable. The AI working to make the images better seems evident as the images took some time to process. The camera UI also looks pragmatic with its simple design and variety of modes like video, AI cam, beauty, bokeh, and AR shot. Video recording maxes out at 1080p; however, the observed output was shaky and unappealing.

The front camera too does a decent enough job for the price as it captured some good-looking selfies with the bokeh mode. The images had a fair amount of detail and saturation which fared well for Instagram use. It performed well under low lighting conditions as it kept the background noise under control. In all the camera quality has improved on the front facing camera but remains slightly above average.

Battery and Connectivity

The Hot 7 Pro comes with a respectable 4000mAh battery which lasted for a solid 15 Hours. It comes with a 10W charger included in the box.

Connectivity options include a dual 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi, GPS/AGPS, Bluetooth 5.0, 3.5 mm audio jack, FM radio, and micro USB port.

Gizmo Verdict

The Infinix Hot 7 Pro is one great option from the company. Given the price point of ₹10,000, it’s a bargain. It comes with a good camera, massive 6 gigs of RAM, great battery life which makes it a very strong contender and something you might consider genuinely buying. For a company that has just entered the market.
