Samsung Galaxy M40: A Solid Mid-Ranger, Period!

Samsung has upped its smartphone game with bombarding the users with a quintessential device for each price bracket. This strategy is paying off as Samsung regains its might against the market captivating options brought by the Chinese rivals.

The M-series with its budget segment offering has successfully lead this revolution and garnered some demographic in the online marketplace for Samsung.

The Galaxy M40 is their latest jab at a smartphone that intends to fulfil all the requirements without the compromises made on a budget smartphone. So, can it deliver on this promise for a price bracket under INR 19,990, well let’s find out?

Design

The design language that the M40 borrows is in-line with its class of M-series devices. The device has a massive display with an apparently protruding selfie camera from the punch hole display. Back consists of a triple camera setup which is nothing out of ordinary as seen on some of the A-series devices. The overall design is right in tune with the average expectation of a user through its well-rounded corners and well-balanced design.

Display

The idea of chopping off the teardrop shape to make more room for the screen has really paid off great. The screen looks very pleasing to look at with its immersive infinity aspect ratio and spot-on colour reproduction. Samsung has done a commendable job as the panel looks great despite it being a TFT display.

Performance

The internals of the Galaxy M40 includes a Snapdragon 675 chipset that is one of the best budget chipsets made by Qualcomm. The performance was just in the ballpark of what we observed. It handled everything we threw at it without breaking a sweat.

Switching between multiple apps was a breeze, so was the gameplay under the given medium settings. The chipset maintained a decent FPS for extensive titles such as Asphalt 9, MC5 and Real Racing. The Gaming experience is good and didn’t find any heating issue.

The M40 is running the latest One UI 1.1 that is built on top of Android 9 Pie. The software is optimised to render smooth visuals and consistent animations. However, one must note that the UI is memory intensive and takes up some considerable RAM to process the functions. Hidden in the UI is a lot of bloatware that Samsung includes out of the box which users can thankfully delete to make up some space.

Camera

In terms of camera performance, the triple camera setup of a 32-megapixel f/1.7 lens, an 8-megapixel ultrawide shooter and a third 5-megapixel depth sensor works well to provide good pictures.

The images came out with a decent level of saturation and brightness which makes it borderline sufficient. The dynamic settings suffer from a lot of noise as it struggles to recognize the given scene and ends up overpowering the overall conditions with a tint.

Battery

The M-series is known for their splendid battery performance; however, this wasn’t the case with the M40 as it gave just over 5 hours of battery life under moderate usage. It packs with 3,500 mAh battery, the 15W Charges tops up the battery to 100% under an hour and a half.

Additional features include a fingerprint scanner that works great and a single speaker is loud enough to enjoy the music in a room.

Gizmo Verdict

Samsung Galaxy M40 comes up with a complete package tag. Nonetheless, the Galaxy M40 is an ideal choice for a person looking for a dependable smartphone under the given budget price point. It fulfils all the necessities of a good smartphone without compromising on anything that would make it obsolete.
